Portable Appliance Testing Melbourne

Why Test and Tag is Essential in the Workplace?

When it comes to succeeding in business, there are so many factors.  You may be providing a great product or service to your customers and employ a vibrant productive workforce.  However, the quality of that product or service and the health and wellbeing of your workforce are heavily reliant on vital equipment and appliances.

RKH Test and Tag help keep your workplace safe and compliant through regular testing of essential equipment and appliances.

What is Test and Tag and Why is it Important?

More commonly known as Portable Appliance Testing (PAT), Test and Tag is the examination of electrical equipment and appliances. The purpose is to check whether the equipment and appliances are safe to use and if they are utilized properly.

While some may argue that appliances can be checked visually, PAT is able to determine many defects within an appliance or piece of equipment which would otherwise go undetected by just looking.

What Equipment Does NOT Require Testing?

Re-chargeable appliances that have very low voltage are essentially safe to use in the workplace, so by law these aren’t required to be tagged.

Examples include laptop computers, cameras, mobile phones, and torches.

Battery operated appliances themselves do not need to be tested however the chargers of these appliances do need to be tested.

What happens if Test and Tag is Not Performed?

Suffice to say, the unthinkable worst-case scenario could be loss of life.

When essential or every day appliances are not routinely checked the safety of both employees and customers is compromised. The risk is significant!

Unchecked equipment can negatively affect sales performance as well as the quality of service being offered by the company or industry.

In addition, stringent workplace regulations mean that non-compliant businesses face serious financial repercussions as well.

The damage of course extends far beyond financial. Your heavy conscience, staff morale and your business’ reputation and future success is on the line. It’s not a scenario any of us business owners want ever to face.

Here are some other possible scenarios which can arise without regular test and tagging:

Damange to Property

Equipment becomes Faulty/ or Beyond Repair

Electrick Shock

Injury

Disability

Compliance

Businesses found to be Non-Compliant can be prosecuted for breaching Worksafe rules and face very hefty fines. With both these factors in mind, a routine tag and test inspection is an invaluable investment.

Safety

Safety is not the only incentive for keeping up to date with Testing and Tagging.

How often should you do Test and Tag?

Note that there is no law that specifies how often Test and Tag should be done.

While we have general guidelines, such as the one above, there are still special conditions. For instance, machinery used in construction and demolition must be subject to Test and Tag more often because they are subjected to extreme conditions, like moisture, heat, dust and dirt.

How Long Does a Test and Tag Inspection Take?

An experience and qualified tester can examine approx. 150 items in one day in an industrial setting and approx. 300 items per day in an office setting.

This will vary from business to business depending on accessibility, whether cords are tied up, under or on top of desks and so on.

What is the Cost of Test and Tag?

You’ll be surprised, but depending on the number of items requiring testing the cost per item could be as low as $3! However, there are several factors which influence the cost such as the types of appliances and the technology being used in the examination as well as (as mentioned above) accessibility.

In general though the cost per item does decrease the more items requiring testing.

At a minimum you should expect to pay $100+GST for 10 items/tags or less.

Our most competetive rates can be offered where there are 500+ items to tag, however the problem we often come across with new clients is that they often underestimate the number of items they need tagged.

If you’re local to Carrum Downs, Dandenong, Cranbourne, Frankston or even Mornington Peninsula where travel is not such a factor for us pricing may work out more favourable.  We like to work with our clients long term and love to support local businesses.

This is why we created our Online Test and Tag Quote Form to help avoid this and be able to give you the most accurate up front quote.
